What is Connection?
“Connection” is a bit of a confusing term, really. Wikipedia list 58 possible meanings – 15 separate meanings in Mathematics, 15 in Technology, 9 in Media, 16 in Music, and 3 in “Other uses”. So it’s clearly a popular term.
The only meaning relevant to Mindful Tango is, of course, within the context of Argentine Tango, used to develop practice of mindfulness within our daily life.
Connection in Tango
I had been partner dancing for over a decade before starting Argentine Tango. But up until that point, I didn’t really understand the term “connection”. It was something that other dancers and teachers talked about, and I nodded along with them, agreeing that this thing was essential, but without really having any ideas of what the term actually meant.
And then I started with Tango, the intensity of the connection and the movement blew me away; it was unlike anything I’d experienced before. This closeness, this intimacy, this continuous connection, was something I felt at a deep level, something which I’d not experienced (or at least not so much) in other dance forms. Each Tango dance felt like holding my breath for 3 minutes (I’ve heard similar expressions from other people starting to learn Tango).
Within Tango, connection occurs with your partner, with the music, and with the other people dancing around you. Connection is inherent to Argentine Tango; it’s literally impossible to dance Tango without developing connection.
Using Connection in Mindful Tango
Connection occurs when we are in harmony in our relationships. When we are in harmony, we feel well and happy, our spirits are lifted, life becomes easier and things just fall into place.
Deep connection is meaningful, it is rewarding and it is enriching. We may have thousands of “connected” online friends, but if none of these connections feel meaningful, we still feel alone.
